This particular gentleman bought a car insurance policy which was discounted because he accepted fitment of a telematics unit – better know as a “black box”. He then engaged a friend to stage a fake accident but there wasn’t enough damage to suit him so he re-staged it another 3 times plus hit the car several times with a hammer just to make sure.

He submitted claims for damage, car hire and personal injury totalling over £90,000.

When the insurance company engineer checked the black box, the sequence of events became clear and the claim was refuted. Our hero didn’t take the hint and tried to push his claim through the civil courts. He lost and was ordered to pay £70,000 in legal costs. He was also referred to the criminal courts for fraud and his next court appearance awaits.
