Last month’s heavy rain in the South East caused quite a lot of damage to houses and businesses, mainly due to the volume of rain overwhelming the main drainage systems. A contributor to this was the lack of maintenance by local and County Councils. In one instance, it was found that the drain in one road was reduced to 20% of its’ capacity by fat and debris.

We strongly recommend that you check your local surface water drains – we have seen some that have small trees growing out of them – and report any issues to the authorities. This doesn’t mean they will actually do anything, given the current state of local government budgets, but in the event of your home or business being flooded, it does mean that there is a solid case for your insurer to claim any outlay back from the responsible Council.
